The click now lands in a conversation
Most requests for web pages now come from machines, the assistants are turning the ad click into an agent conversation, and the messaging apps are metering it. What a view is worth when the viewer might be a program, and what survives.
Sometime in the first days of June, according to the chief executive of the company that sits in front of a large share of the world’s websites, the web crossed a line it will not cross back: for the first time, most requests for web pages came from machines. Roughly fifty-seven percent bots, forty-three percent people, with the growth almost entirely in what he called agentic traffic, software browsing on a human’s behalf. He had predicted the crossover for late next year. It arrived eighteen months early, which is the kind of schedule slip that tells you the thing being measured has stopped being a trend and become the weather.
The second data point is smaller and, for anyone who sells anything, more interesting. At the end of July a new campaign type was spotted in the advertising console of the most used AI assistant on earth. It is called, plainly, Agent. When a person clicks the ad, they do not go to your website. They are handed to an agent that represents your business inside the assistant, built from a crawl of your site, your product feed, whatever tools you connect, and a lead form. The click, the unit the entire web economy is priced in, lands in a conversation. Meanwhile the largest messaging company in the world rolled its own business agent out globally in June, the one that answers questions, qualifies leads, and books appointments inside WhatsApp and Instagram, and on the first of August it started billing for it by the token. The conversation is not only where the click lands. It is a product now, with a meter on it.
What a view is worth when the viewer might be a program
We have been saying for some time that views do not buy. That was an argument about attention: a view tells you a page loaded, not that a person decided anything. The agentic web makes it an argument about existence. When a majority of page requests are automated, a view does not reliably certify that a human was present at all. The impressions in your analytics are now a mix of people, crawlers indexing for answer engines, and agents running errands, and the mix is not labeled. The old funnel metric did not merely go soft. It lost its referent.
What survives the change is anything a program cannot do on a human’s behalf without that human knowing. An agent can load your pricing page. It cannot, meaningfully, answer “what is the biggest thing slowing your team down right now?” and choose the branch that describes its situation. It cannot book a call and show up to it. It does not rewatch the objection section because something in it landed. The answer, the choice, the booking, the rewatch: these are the residue of a decision, and a decision is the one thing the traffic numbers can no longer be assumed to contain.
A view can be a program. An answer is a person.
Two doors, and you have to stand in both
The practical shape of this is a building with two entrances. Through the first come people, fewer than before, because the answer engines keep a growing share of them (we covered the arithmetic of that in the zero-click piece), and those who arrive are increasingly sent by an assistant that already briefed them. Through the second come the agents and the engines themselves, reading your pages to decide whether to mention you, cite you, or send their principal through the first door.
Here we should disclose an interest, because this is precisely the business StreamAgent is in, and you may discount what follows accordingly. For the first door, the product exists to make the visit count: a video that asks, branches on the answer, captures at peak interest, books the call inside the player, and scores the person on what they did, so the scarce human who arrives becomes a record rather than a pageview. For the second door, every published video carries a clean transcript page an engine can read and cite, the site publishes a machine-readable index of what it offers, and a workspace’s own videos, leads, and analytics can be connected to an assistant so the business can ask its own data questions. The first door converts. The second earns the next visitor. Standing in only one of them is the mistake that will look obvious in a year.
The landlords are moving too
It is worth noticing that the platforms are not waiting. Google shipped a button publishers can embed so readers can mark them a preferred source, which is a search engine asking the open web to help it remember who to send traffic to. The assistants are building the conversation as an ad destination. The messaging apps are metering it. Each is making the same bet from a different side: that the unit of commerce is becoming the exchange, not the click, and that whoever hosts the exchange collects the rent.
You cannot host the assistant. You can make sure that when the exchange happens, on your page, in your video, inside someone else’s agent, it produces something you own: a name, an answer, a booked time, a signal your campaigns can learn from. The click was a proxy for a decision. The decision is still there. Measure that.
The click now lands in a conversation. Make sure the conversation lands with you.
One platform, seven layers
This article covered one slice. The machine ships whole: record it, get it found, arm it, test it, rank the leads, train the ads, and ask your AI how it is going.
Common questions
- What share of web traffic is now bots?
- About 57 percent of HTTP requests for web pages, according to Cloudflare's chief executive in early June 2026, the first time automated traffic has been the majority, with agentic AI traffic the driver.
- What is a business-agent ad in ChatGPT?
- A campaign type spotted in ChatGPT's ads console in late July 2026 where clicking the ad opens a conversation with an agent that represents the business inside the assistant, built from a crawl of the site, a product feed, connected tools, and a lead form, instead of sending the click to a website.
- How should a business respond to the agentic web?
- Stand in both doors. Make every human visit count by asking, capturing, booking, and scoring inside the video so the visit produces something you own, and be citable to the machines with clean transcript pages and a machine-readable index so assistants send the next visitor.
