Zero-click search is here. Every visit you still get is everything

AI Overviews now appear on 43% of searches and 68% of queries end without a click. The free-traffic era is closing. The scarcity economics of the modern funnel.

For twenty-five years, the deal underneath the entire internet economy was simple: make something worth finding, and the search engine would send you the people who were looking. That deal is being renegotiated in public, without your signature. The search engine now answers the question itself, on its own page, and the click that used to follow, the raw material of every funnel ever built, increasingly never happens.

The supporting evidence keeps arriving. Pew Research, in the landmark behavioral study of real search sessions, found users clicked a result 8 percent of the time when an AI summary appeared, versus 15 percent without one, and abandoned the session entirely a quarter of the time. This week roughly three hundred French newspapers filed a competition complaint against Google, armed with regulator-documented traffic losses of 33 to 38 percent in European markets where AI Overviews are live. Whatever the courts decide, the direction is not in dispute: the open web’s free traffic era is ending.

The part everyone gets wrong

The tempting conclusion is that search is dying. It is not; it is inverting. Google’s search ad revenue grew 17 percent last quarter, and its AI Mode passed a billion monthly users. The machine is healthier than ever. What is dying is the free click, the organic visit that publishers and businesses treated as a birthright. Search is becoming a place where questions get answered rather than a gateway that hands you visitors, and there is a genuine silver lining in the wreckage: when an AI answer does cite you and a user does click through, that visitor arrives unusually well informed and unusually ready. The clicks are fewer. They are also worth more.

Traffic is no longer a tide that rises on its own. Every visit is now precious.

Scarcity economics for your funnel

Here is the strategic consequence, stated plainly. When a hundred visits become thirty, the businesses that win are not the ones who fight hardest for the ninety they lost. They are the ones who convert the thirty they still get. A landing page that captures two percent of visitors was tolerable when traffic was free and infinite. In the zero-click era it is a leak you can no longer afford, which is the argument we made in the case against the under-video form, sharpened by arithmetic.

This is precisely the business StreamAgent is in, so discount accordingly, but the logic holds with or without us. A visit that lands on an interactive video does not bounce off a wall of text; it enters a conversation. The video asks what the visitor needs and routes them to the pitch that fits. The email gets captured inside the story, at peak interest, so one visit becomes a relationship you own, immune to the next algorithm change. Lead intelligence scores every viewer, so scarce follow-up hours go to the people most likely to buy. And every action streams to your ad platforms as training signal, because in a world of shrinking organic reach, paid campaigns that learn from real intent are how you replace the traffic the answer engines kept.

And be the answer, while you are at it

The other half of the adaptation is to stop writing only for the click and start being quotable to the machines that answer. Pages that state facts plainly, carry structured data, and publish clean, citable text are what AI assistants reference, and a citation in an answer is the new position one. We practice what we preach here: this site publishes a machine-readable index of everything on it, and every video page on the platform ships a transcript an assistant can read and cite. The funnel captures the visit. The citations earn the next one.

The click is disappearing. The visit you still get is everything.

Common questions

What is zero-click search?
A search that ends without the user clicking through to any website, because the results page itself answered the question, increasingly via an AI Overview or AI Mode answer. Recent studies put zero-click at roughly 68% of Google searches, and Pew Research found users click a result about half as often when an AI summary appears.
How much traffic do AI Overviews take from websites?
Studies vary by site and query type, but the direction is consistent: an Ahrefs study measured about 58% lower click-through for top-ranking pages when an AI Overview appears, and French regulators documented publisher traffic losses of 33 to 38 percent in markets where AI Overviews launched.
How should businesses adapt to zero-click search?
Two moves. Convert harder: treat every remaining visit as scarce, capture leads inside the content at peak interest rather than hoping for a second click, and use intent-graded ad signals to replace lost organic reach. And be citable: publish clean, structured, machine-readable pages so AI answer engines reference you, because a citation in an answer is the new top ranking.
